SINOPSIS / SYNOPSIS

Una road movie poética y antropocósmica. En un viaje atemporal por algunas zonas de Ecuador y Colombia, el realizador, representado por su sombra, se desplaza hacia los territorios donde habitaron sus ancestros, armado únicamente con la cámara de su teléfono celular y un paquete de velas para iluminar los caminos de la memoria. Paralelamente, la sombra descubre la cultura Pasto a través del arte escultórico, pictórico y musical, acompañando el redescubrimiento de la lengua de un pueblo que se perdió entre las conquistas del incario y la corona española.

Atravesando paisajes, la sombra llega a Esmeraldas, su provincia natal, cuyos ríos están contaminados por la explotación minera y la región dominada por bandas armadas del narcotráfico. En ese contexto, la sombra se reconecta con el pueblo donde nació su madre; viaja en el tiempo para contemplar la llegada de su primer ancestro europeo, que naufragó y rescató una antigua máquina impresora; revive momentos de su infancia y adolescencia, buscando un lugar donde la vida palpite con libertad.

Casi al final del viaje, encuentra un pueblo de negros y mulatos donde todos son parientes, conociendo por primera vez a sus familiares maternos, de origen africano. El viaje de la sombra está acompañado por la presencia de naves desconocidas que se manifiestan desde el espacio hasta establecer un contacto sensorial armonioso con el personaje, como parte del reencuentro con la memoria cósmica.

A poetic anthropocosmic roadtrip movie. On a timeless journey through Ecuador and Colombia, the film maker, with a cell phone camera and a candle pack to light the way, is represented by his shadow as he travels to the lands where his ancestors lived. Over the course of the film, the shadow discovers the Pasto culture through its sculptural, pictorial, and musical art, and rediscovers the language of a people lost between the conquests of the Incas and the Spanish crown. Crossing the landscape, the shadow reaches Esmeraldas, his native province, whose rivers are contaminated by mining exploitation, and the region is dominated by armed drug trafficking gangs. In this context, the shadow reconnects with the town where his mother was born; he travels back in time to witness the arrival of his first European ancestor, who was a survivor of a shipwreck, and rescues an antique printing press. He relives moments of his childhood and adolescence, looking for a place where life pulses freely. Almost at the end of the trip, he finds a town of blacks and mulattoes where everyone is related, meeting for the first time his maternal relatives of African origin. The journey of the shadow is accompanied by the presence of mysterious vessels that manifest from space and manage to establish sensory contact with the protagonist in a harmonious way, becoming part of his reencounter with cosmic memory.

MOTIVACIÓN / MOTIVATION

En los territorios que integran Nariño con el Carchi se asentaron mis primeros antepasados europeos. En la zona de Pupiales, nació y creció mi tatarabuelo materno, entre generosas lomas oleadas de variados tonos verdes, cielos en permanente combustión alquímica de nubes vaporosas, cielos oscuros y a la vez azules y lluvias abrillantadas por el Sol… El primer antepasado en llegar a estas tierras se llamó Francisco, e introdujo una imprenta a los territorios que hoy se conocen como Ecuador y Colombia y que formaron parte del Abya Ayala. Es muy probable que mis antiguos familiares al ser personas de cultura y letras se hayan fascinado en el encuentro con el PUEBLO PASTO que floreció entre el Valle del Chota en Ecuador y la ciudad colombiana que honra su nombre. De esta manera en el entorno familiar empieza un mestizaje al que pertenezco y del cual soy descendiente, al igual que mi madre y padre que son parientes cercanos y por los que corren sangres también mestizas, llegadas de Castilla y Aragón, confluyendo con las venas nativas y sabias de culturas precolombinas que crecieron cultivando y embelleciendo estos paisajes, así como con la etnia negra, en la provincia de Esmeraldas de donde soy oriundo.

En el presente documental que contiene pinceladas de experimentación cinematográfica, me he propuesto de manera intuitiva y a la vez investigativa, descubrir poetizando y filosofando, en el engranaje de imágenes y sonidos, misterios que me corren por las venas y a la vez contribuir a los procesos de autoconocimiento colectivo en el que se incorporan proyectos como el rescate de la lengua nativa que se perdió entre el sometimiento proveniente de los Incas y la conquista española, así como las artes y costumbres derivadas de su cosmovisión, poniendo énfasis en el alto conocimiento alcanzado en los campos astronómicos y astrológicos, que podemos evidenciar en la simbología y “geometría sagrada” que permanecen grabadas en los variados y múltiples objetos arqueológicos, así como en tejidos y artesanías… Me motiva también acercar en la película al hombre de la tierra con la de seres del espacio, hoy, desconocidos, con el propósito de establecer o restablecer una comunicación armoniosa que nos ayude, quizás, a reincorporarnos de manera consciente al universo multicivilizatorio y polidimensional en el que coexistimos…

My first European ancestors settled in the territories that make up Nariño and Carchi. My maternal great-great-grandfather was born and grew up in the Pupiales area, among generous hills undulating in various shades of green, skies in a permanent alchemical combustion of vaporous clouds, dark yet blue skies and sun-brightened rain… The first ancestor to arrive in these lands was called Francisco, and he introduced a printing press to the territories that are now known as Ecuador and Colombia and that were part of the Abya Ayala. It is very likely that my ancient relatives, being people of culture and letters, were fascinated by the encounter with the PASTO PEOPLE who flourished between the Chota Valley in Ecuador and the Colombian city that honors their name. In this way, a miscegenation to which I belong and of which I am a descendant began in the family environment, as did my mother and father, who are close relatives and through whom mixed bloods also run, arrived from Castile and Aragon, merging with the native and wise veins of pre-Columbian cultures that grew cultivating and embellishing these landscapes, as well as with the black ethnic group, in the province of Esmeraldas where I am from.

In the present documentary, which contains touches of cinematographic experimentation, I have set out intuitively and at the same time investigatively, to discover poetizing and philosophizing, in the interweaving of images and sounds, mysteries that run through my veins and at the same time contribute to the processes of collective self-knowledge that incorporate projects such as the recovery of the native language that was lost between the subjugation by the Incas and the Spanish conquest, as well as the arts and customs derived from their worldview, emphasizing the high level of knowledge achieved in the astronomical and astrological fields, which we can see in the symbolism and “sacred geometry” that remain engraved in the varied and multiple archaeological objects, as well as in fabrics and handicrafts… I am also motivated to bring the man of the earth closer to the beings from space, unknown today, with the purpose of establishing or reestablishing a harmonious communication that will help us, perhaps, to consciously rejoin the multi-civilizational and multidimensional universe in which we coexist…

BIO DEL DIRECTOR / BIO OF THE DIRECTOR

Wilson Burbano nació en Ecuador. Estudió en la Universidad Panrusa Guerásimov de Cinematografía (VGIK). Ha realizado cortometrajes en Moscú, New York y Quito, con distinciones en Festivales de Cine de Japón, México, Colombia, Bolivia y Ecuador. Dictó talleres y conferencias sobre la Sensorialidad, el Vacío y el Psicoanálisis en el Cine; Cinematografía Latinoamericana de Vanguardia y otros temas relacionados con el séptimo arte en universidades de Estados Unidos y Ecuador. Escribe para revistas nacionales y extranjeras sobre cultura y artes. Es realizador del largometraje de ficción “Big Bang”, premiado en Suiza, México, Colombia, EEUU, Francia y Ecuador, además de obtener reconocimientos en otros países de Europa y Asia. Su nuevo largometraje documental se llama “Memoria mágica”.

Wilson Burbano was born in Ecuador. He studied at the All-Russian Gerasimov University of Cinematography (VGIK). He has made short films in Moscow, New York and Quito, with distinctions in Film Festivals in Japan, Mexico, Colombia, Bolivia and Ecuador. He has given workshops and conferences on Sensoriality, Emptiness and Psychoanalysis in Film; Latin American Avant-Garde Cinematography and other topics related to the seventh art in universities in the United States and Ecuador. He writes for national and foreign magazines on culture and the arts. He is the director of the fiction feature film “Big Bang”, awarded in Switzerland, Mexico, Colombia, USA, France and Ecuador, in addition to receiving recognition in other countries in Europe and Asia. His new feature documentary is called “Memoria Mágica”.
